Customs Officers Discover $2 Million Worth of Meth Hidden as Holiday Gifts
A 29-year-old woman from Canada was caught trying to smuggle over $2 million worth of methamphetamine disguised as Christmas presents at Auckland International Airport in New Zealand. She arrived on a flight from Vancouver on December 8.
Customs officers became suspicious after questioning her and decided to inspect her carry-on duffle bag. To their surprise, they found more than 22 pounds of meth hidden beneath colorful wrapping paper decorated with snowflakes.
Airport officials described the situation as a typical attempt by organized crime groups to take advantage of the busy holiday travel season. Paul Williams, the Auckland Airport Manager, emphasized that despite the hustle and bustle, customs officers remain vigilant and dedicated to keeping dangerous drugs out of New Zealand.
The authorities stated that the drugs found in the woman’s bag had a street value exceeding $2 million in the U.S. market. Following the discovery, the woman was charged with importing and possessing a Class A controlled substance.
As part of the ongoing investigation, customs authorities are collaborating with Canadian partners to tackle drug smuggling efforts. The woman is currently in custody, as authorities work to address the growing issue of drug trafficking during peak travel times.
