Montage Health Announces New CEO, Michael P. McDermott, MD, MBA
Montage Health has revealed that Dr. Michael P. McDermott will take on the role of President and CEO in the spring of 2025. This change comes as current President and CEO, Dr. Steven Packer, prepares for retirement after 25 years at the helm, during which he has made significant contributions to the organization and the wider community.
Bill Warner, Chair of the Montage Health Board of Trustees, expressed enthusiasm about Dr. McDermott’s appointment. He stated, "We are excited to welcome Dr. McDermott to lead this remarkable organization in its next chapter. Dr. Packer’s leadership has set a strong foundation, and we trust that Dr. McDermott will build on this success as we continue to enhance the health and wellness of our community."
Dr. McDermott comes to Montage Health with extensive experience. He is a trained diagnostic and interventional radiologist who previously worked with Radiologic Associates of Fredericksburg. For the last eight years, he has served as CEO of Mary Washington Healthcare in Virginia. He holds a degree from Villanova University, a medical degree from the University of Cincinnati, and advanced training in Diagnostic and Interventional Radiology from the University of Maryland Medical System. Additionally, he earned an MBA from the Darden School of Business at the University of Virginia.
Recognized multiple times by Becker’s Hospital Review as a top hospital leader, Dr. McDermott is also a Fellow of both the American College of Radiology and the Society of Interventional Radiology. His commitment to innovation and patient-centered care aligns closely with Montage Health’s goal of providing exceptional service to Monterey County for nearly 90 years.
Reflecting on his new role, Dr. McDermott said, "It was a tough choice to leave an organization I have led for the past ten years. However, I am excited to carry on Dr. Packer’s remarkable legacy at Montage Health, a health system I have long admired. My wife, Chrissy, and I have enjoyed many visits to Monterey and are looking forward to being closer to our sons who live in the area."
Under Dr. Packer’s guidance, Montage Health has grown into a strong healthcare system with Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula at its core. His time in leadership saw significant advancements including the expansion of the hospital, the establishment of Ohana—a mental health campus for youth, the creation of the Montage Medical Group that includes over 100 providers, and the launch of Aspire Health Plan, which was Monterey County’s first Medicare Advantage program. These efforts have greatly increased healthcare access and ensured high-quality care for the local population.
Stepping down, Dr. Packer shared, "Serving this community has been the greatest honor of my life. As I help transition to new leadership, I am confident in our talented team and eager to see Dr. McDermott continue our mission of excellent care and health promotion." Dr. Packer will remain in his position until spring 2025.
Warner added, “Montage Health, as a local, nonprofit healthcare system, is always focused on people—patients, staff, and the community. With Dr. McDermott leading us, we will stay true to our mission, offering top-quality care and addressing the changing needs of our community.”
