Akari Fujinami Sets Sights on Olympic Gold After First Career Loss
Japanese wrestling star Akari Fujinami has pledged to recover from her first-ever loss and aim for gold at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics. The young athlete’s remarkable 155-match winning streak came to an abrupt halt during the Asian Games held in Nagoya. However, this unexpected defeat has only fueled her determination for future competitions.
Fujinami faced her first international loss since 2017 when she was pinned by Son Il Sim from DPR Korea in the semi-finals of the women’s 57kg category. Son established a quick 10-0 lead before concluding the match, ending Fujinami’s extraordinary unbeaten journey. Nevertheless, Fujinami managed to secure a bronze medal after regrouping from the setback.
The defeat was tough for Fujinami, leaving her feeling frustrated yet motivated. “I feel deeply frustrated. Even though I lost, the support from people has strengthened my resolve,” she shared.
“I am determined that at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics, with the support of everyone behind me, I will definitely win a gold medal.”
Facing New Challenges
This loss was particularly significant for Fujinami, who has built a strong reputation as a dominant force in wrestling. She clinched Olympic gold in the 53kg category at the Paris 2024 Games, and also won World Championship titles in 2021 and 2023, as well as gold at the 2023 Asian Games—all in the same weight class.
At the Asian Games, Fujinami moved up to the 57kg category, where she continued her impressive track record. However, Son’s victory in the semi-finals shocked many and ended Fujinami’s nine-year winning streak.
Having little experience with defeat in her wrestling career, the loss brought about emotions Fujinami had never felt before. She described the challenge of returning to the mat for the bronze medal match as “an indescribable emotion.”
“I was extremely terrified to step onto the mat again after the semi-finals,” Fujinami admitted. Yet, she found strength in the support from her father and friends, who encouraged her during this tough time.
“Many people were by my side, giving me words of encouragement. I appreciated every message I received,” she said.
Fujinami ultimately claimed the bronze medal, ensuring her time at the Asian Games didn’t end with that surprising loss. More importantly, this experience offered her a new viewpoint after years of success without defeat.
While her unbeaten streak has come to an end, Fujinami now possesses something new in her career—a valuable lesson from a painful defeat. With the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games on the horizon, she aims to turn this challenging moment into the foundation for future triumphs.
