Hong Kong Sixes 2026: India Out, Bhuvneshwar Kumar Takes the Helm!

Bhuvneshwar Kumar to Lead India at Hong Kong Sixes

Bhuvneshwar Kumar might not be returning to the Indian national team anytime soon, but the experienced fast bowler is still very active in the cricket scene. The 36-year-old has been named captain of a strong Indian team that will compete in the Hong Kong Sixes, scheduled from October 30 to November 1.

Alongside Bhuvneshwar, his Royal Challengers Bengaluru teammate, Krunal Pandya, will join the squad, which also includes Nitish Rana, Shashank Singh, T Natarajan, Rahul Tripathi, and Rahul Tewatia. Except for Shashank, all players have previously represented India, adding to the tournament’s international appeal. However, Bhuvneshwar’s recent form and seasoned presence will undoubtedly be the highlight of the team.

The Hong Kong Sixes is a thrilling six-a-side cricket tournament that has been around since 1992. After a brief pause, the tournament made a comeback in 2024 and has since become a favorite event in the cricket calendar.

India’s Squad for Hong Kong Sixes:

  • Bhuvneshwar Kumar (captain)
  • Krunal Pandya
  • Shashank Singh
  • Rahul Tewatia
  • Nitish Rana
  • Rahul Tripathi
  • T. Natarajan

This year, Bhuvneshwar has performed exceptionally well in white-ball cricket, taking 28 wickets in 16 matches during IPL 2026. His noteworthy performance was crucial for RCB, which managed to defend its title. Despite batsmen thriving in favorable conditions, Bhuvneshwar maintained a solid economy rate of 7.95.

He continued his impressive run during the UP T20 League in August and September, grabbing 14 wickets in 11 matches. These performances have sparked discussions about a potential return to the national team. However, Bhuvneshwar, now 36, has stated that he is not focusing on making a national comeback.

“I’ve already played for India. That’s not something I have to achieve now. If I get another chance, that’s great, but I’ve been there. Everything I’m doing now is because of my love for the game. I know I have to stay disciplined,” he shared last month.

Such a mindset will be beneficial at the Hong Kong Sixes, where players must quickly adapt. The format demands an offensive approach and flexibility, leaving little time for players to find their rhythm.

Bhuvneshwar brings a wealth of international and IPL experience to this well-rounded squad, which combines established stars with T20 specialists. Krunal adds all-round skills, while Rana, Shashank, and Tewatia contribute strength and finishing ability. Tripathi brings a dynamic flair, and Natarajan offers additional pace options.

India comes into this tournament after a mixed performance in 2025. The team managed to secure a tight win against Pakistan but faced defeats that led to their early exit. On the other hand, Pakistan enters the 2026 edition as defending champions, having secured their sixth title last year by defeating Kuwait in the finals.

This time, Bhuvneshwar takes over the captaincy from Dinesh Karthik, who led the team at last year’s Sixes. Karthik’s squad included several former Indian players and had a promising start before faltering in subsequent matches.

With Bhuvneshwar at the helm, fans are eager to see how India performs in the upcoming tournament.
