BBL 2024-25: R Ashwin Weighs In on Jamie Overton’s Non-Striker Run-Out Alert in Big Bash League

Former Indian cricketer R Ashwin shared his thoughts on Jamie Overton’s recent decision to break the stumps at the non-striker’s end during a Big Bash League match on New Year’s Eve. This moment took place at the Adelaide Oval, where Overton noticed that opposition batter Finn Allen often strayed out of his crease before the bowler delivered the ball.

During the 8th over of the match, while the Perth Scorchers were chasing a total against the Adelaide Strikers, Overton broke the stumps at the non-striker’s end as Allen stepped out. However, rather than appealing for a wicket, Overton opted to warn Allen instead, showing sportsmanship by informing the umpire of his intentions.

While running out a batter at the non-striker’s end for backing up too far has traditionally been seen as controversial, the perception is changing. The cricket community, along with governing bodies, increasingly recognizes it as fair play, particularly after the International Cricket Council (ICC) reclassified this type of dismissal as a “Run Out” in October 2022, trying to reduce any negative stigma associated with it.

This method of dismissal became a heated topic during the 2019 Indian Premier League (IPL) season when Ashwin, then the captain of the Punjab Kings, ran out Rajasthan Royals’ Jos Buttler at the non-striker’s end. This incident sparked discussions about the spirit of cricket, but Ashwin stood his ground against the backlash, emphasizing that the dismissal adhered to game rules. Since then, he has actively supported this form of dismissal.

Interestingly, Jamie Overton is set to team up with Ashwin in the 2025 IPL season, playing for the Chennai Super Kings.

In the match itself, Overton and Allen exchanged words on the field before Overton broke the stumps, with tensions heightened after Overton had conceded 18 runs in his initial over.

Allen’s explosive 50 runs off just 23 balls played a crucial role in securing a decisive victory for the Strikers. He was supported by Cooper Connolly, who scored 48 runs off 35 balls, while team captain Ashton Turner wrapped up the chase with a rapid 35 from 18 balls.

The Perth Scorchers completed their chase of 143 runs in only 14.3 overs, celebrating the New Year with a solid win. Earlier, fast bowlers Jhye Richardson, Jason Behrendorff, and Lance Morris shone with the ball, taking seven wickets combined and keeping the Adelaide side to 142 runs in their 20 overs.

With this victory, the Scorchers climbed to second place in the 8-team points table, now holding 6 points from 5 matches. Meanwhile, the Sydney Sixers hold the top spot, having won all four of their matches so far, while the Adelaide Strikers are positioned in 7th place with just one victory from five games.
