Arkansas Tech University Celebrates Constitution Day
On September 17, Arkansas Tech University (ATU) recognized the 239th anniversary of the U.S. Constitution’s adoption with a special event at Mullens Plaza. The gathering was marked by a public reading of the Constitution, led by Dr. Christopher Housenick, an associate professor of political science at the university.
In addition to the reading, ATU organized educational activities in local schools as part of their Constitution Day celebrations. Dr. Gregory Michna and Dr. Michael Rogers from the ATU Department of History and Political Science guided students to Russellville Junior High and Dwight Elementary School. There, more than two dozen ATU students shared lessons about the Constitution with K-12 students.
The U.S. Constitution was officially adopted on September 17, 1787, during a convention in Philadelphia. In 2004, Senator Robert Byrd from West Virginia helped establish the date as Constitution Day, mandating that public schools and universities nationwide conduct educational programs related to the Constitution each year.
