Copenhagen: Denmark and Greenland Reassure Sovereignty Amid US Military Agreement
On Saturday, Denmark and Greenland emphasized that any agreement with the United States will not undermine Greenland’s sovereignty. This reassurance came after former President Donald Trump mentioned that the deal could allow the U.S. to have “permanent control” over the island’s security, leaving some details open to interpretation.
Recently, the U.S., Denmark, and Greenland announced an agreement for the U.S. to establish a notable military presence in Greenland. The deal would also prevent rivals of the U.S. from constructing their military bases on the island.
However, important aspects of this agreement remain undisclosed, such as how much military capacity the U.S. will have in this self-governing Danish territory and whether it will gain any formal authority over foreign policy and resources.
Denmark and Greenland expressed optimism that this upcoming deal, which is expected to be signed at the UN General Assembly next week, will resolve months of uncertainty that began when Trump suggested the U.S. might seek control of Greenland.
Denmark’s Foreign Minister, Lars Lokke Rasmussen, shared his hopes through a Facebook statement, saying, “Next week could be good for Greenland, Denmark, and the United States.” He added that this agreement could enhance security in the Arctic and North Atlantic, ultimately benefiting NATO and Europe while respecting Denmark’s limits.
Both Denmark and Greenland have consistently stated that the U.S. should acknowledge the sovereignty of the Danish kingdom and understand that Greenland is not for sale.
Trump’s Perspective on the Deal
In a post on Truth Social, Trump stated that the deal would ensure that the U.S. has full capabilities to protect both Greenland and the United States. He indicated that this arrangement would grant the U.S. long-term control over security matters and restrict any adversarial presence or significant investments in Greenland without U.S. approval.
His remarks followed a report by Reuters that revealed progress toward an agreement between the U.S. and Denmark.
Mikkel Vedby Rasmussen, a political science professor at the University of Copenhagen, noted that if Denmark grants any control to Washington, it could raise concerns in Greenland about whether this would shift from a colonial relationship with Denmark to a new one with the U.S.
Greenland’s Prime Minister, Jens-Frederik Nielsen, expressed satisfaction with the proposed deal, highlighting that it acknowledges the sovereignty and self-determination rights of the Greenlandic people.
NATO Dynamics and Public Sentiment
Trump’s aggressive statements earlier this year sparked a diplomatic crisis, straining relationships within NATO and prompting Denmark and Greenland to engage in talks to alleviate pressure.
A spokesperson for NATO welcomed the agreement, suggesting it would strengthen security and cooperation in an important area.
Reactions from the public vary. Steffen Nielsen, a 49-year-old sales worker in Copenhagen, remarked that he feels the U.S. could have received what they wanted all along if they had approached the situation differently. Meanwhile, 80-year-old pensioner Kaj Jorgensen expressed skepticism, stating, “I don’t wish the United States to be present anywhere in the Danish Kingdom. I really don’t trust Donald Trump.”
