Tragic Nursery Fire in Islamabad Claims Lives of 14 Infants

A devastating fire broke out at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences in Islamabad on Wednesday, resulting in the heartbreaking deaths of 14 infants in the nursery of the hospital’s gynecology ward. Fortunately, one baby was rescued by a doctor amidst the chaos.

The fire erupted around 6:45 a.m. due to an explosion from an air conditioning unit, as confirmed by hospital officials. The blaze was contained within the nursery and did not spread to other areas of the hospital, ensuring the safety of other patients.

Hospital spokesperson Dr. Aneeza Jalil stated that six of the deceased infants’ bodies had already been returned to their grieving families, and the remaining bodies would follow soon.

Video footage captured families in deep sorrow, mourning the loss of their little ones. One of the distressed mothers, identified as Mrs. Mohammad Sami, shared her pain, saying, “I don’t know what to say or whom to blame. I have lost my child,” just three days after welcoming her baby.

The tragedy prompted immediate action from Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, who removed Health Secretary Aslam Ghauri from his position and ordered an investigation into the incident. “A tragedy involving children is an irreparable loss,” Sharif expressed during a high-level meeting following the disaster.

President Asif Ali Zardari also extended his condolences to the affected families, calling the incident a “heartbreaking and irreparable loss.” The news has left the nation in shock, as families come to terms with this unimaginable tragedy.
