On October 31, India’s opposition parties carried out a symbolic impeachment action in New Delhi against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. This protest was prompted by concerns over a nationwide revision of voter lists. The opposition claims this change could give an unfair advantage to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ruling party, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), according to reports from Channel NewsAsia.
### A Unique Gathering
Representatives from various opposition groups met at the residence of Mallikarjun Kharge, the President of the Indian National Congress, to hold a reenactment of a parliamentary session. Although this symbolic impeachment isn’t legally binding, it has drawn significant attention. Kharge stated that the goal of this action is to uphold the integrity of the Election Commission and ensure it operates fairly, following constitutional principles. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi commented that the opposition took this step out of a need to act, feeling they had no other options.
### Controversy over Voter Lists
The effort to revise electoral registers has stirred political debates and protests across India in recent weeks. The Election Commission argues that updating the lists is necessary for accuracy, but opposition parties allege that the process is being swayed to benefit the BJP, which both the Commission and the ruling party reject.
Under Indian law, the head of the Election Commission can only be removed through a special parliamentary procedure. Home Minister Amit Shah announced that the BJP is open to convening a special session of parliament to discuss these revisions but criticized the opposition for not being willing to participate in this discussion.
