West Nile Virus Detected in Wayne County, Michigan
Wayne County, Michigan, has reported its first case of West Nile virus for this year among local mosquitoes. This detection adds to earlier findings in Bay, Kent, Midland, Ottawa, and St. Clair counties, according to the Wayne County Public Health agency.
Dr. Avani Sheth, the Chief Medical Health Officer for Wayne County Public Health, emphasized the significance of this finding: “Detecting West Nile virus in mosquitoes is normal during this season, but it serves as a reminder that the virus is present in our area. The best way to protect yourself is to avoid mosquito bites.”
To keep enjoying outdoor activities this summer, Dr. Sheth recommends some easy steps. Using insect repellent and eliminating any standing water around your home can significantly reduce the risk of mosquito bites.
West Nile virus is the top cause of mosquito-borne illness in the United States. The virus is transmitted through the bite of an infected mosquito. Across the state, there are regular programs that test mosquitoes for West Nile virus and other diseases.
So far in 2026, there have been no confirmed human cases of West Nile virus in Michigan, although there were cases in previous years. Health experts note that most people infected with the virus do not show symptoms. However, about 1 in 5 people might experience fever, headaches, body aches, joint pain, vomiting, diarrhea, or rash within 2 to 14 days of being bitten by an infected mosquito. In particular, older adults, people with weakened immune systems, and those with certain chronic illnesses are at greater risk, as the virus can lead to serious conditions like meningitis or encephalitis.
Currently, there is no specific treatment or vaccine for West Nile virus, leading health officials to stress the importance of preventing mosquito bites as the best line of defense.
