The Oval Set to Host 2027 World Test Championship Final
The International Cricket Council (ICC) has officially announced that The Oval in London will be the venue for the 2027 World Test Championship (WTC) final. This will be the second time this iconic ground will host the prestigious match.
Scheduled between June 9 and June 13, 2027, June 14 will serve as an extra day if needed. The Oval was previously the site of the 2023 WTC final, where Australia triumphed over India by 209 runs to win their first title in this championship.
This decision follows the ICC’s move last year to grant England the rights to host the next three WTC finals in 2027, 2029, and 2031. The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) will choose the venues for these finals, and The Oval’s successful handling of the 2023 event played a significant role in its selection once again.
The Race for the Final Heats Up
With less than a year left until the final, the competition is intensifying. All nine Test-playing nations still have a mathematical chance to qualify, although the leaderboard is starting to take shape as the tournament progresses.
Currently, Australia is at the top, boasting a remarkable points percentage of 87.50 after winning seven of their first eight Tests. Defending champions South Africa are in second place with 75% points, and New Zealand follows closely with 72.22%.
One of the surprise teams has been Bangladesh, who recently achieved a 2-0 series victory against Pakistan. This performance has pushed them to fourth place with a points percentage of 58.33, placing them in a strong position for their first WTC final appearance.
India Eyes Qualification
India, who have reached the finals twice before, sits fifth with a points percentage of 48.15 after winning four out of nine Tests. While they face some challenges, a successful run in the coming months could significantly improve their chances in this tightly contested qualification.
Just behind India is Sri Lanka with 41.67%. England, despite having home advantage in upcoming matches, currently struggles at 24.36%. The West Indies and Pakistan find themselves at the bottom of the standings and will need a notable turnaround to keep their qualification hopes alive.
Upcoming Key Matches
The next phase of the championship kicks off with West Indies hosting Pakistan for a two-match series starting July 25. Australia will then seek to solidify their top position when they take on Bangladesh in a two-Test series starting August 13.
India will head to Sri Lanka for a two-match Test series that begins on August 15. England will also have a crucial three-Test series against Pakistan later in August and September, with essential points for the World Test Championship at stake in every match.
Since this championship began in 2019, each edition has crowned a different champion. New Zealand won the first title in 2021, followed by Australia in 2023 and South Africa in 2025. The Oval is now set to host the world’s best Test team in 2027.
