The Manchester Derby kicked off with plenty of intensity on Sunday, December 15, as a confrontation erupted between Rasmus Hojlund of Manchester United and Kyle Walker from Manchester City in the first half. This fiery moment occurred in the 39th minute when Walker tripped Hojlund, leading to a heated exchange where Hojlund seemed to retaliate with a headbutt directed at Walker.
As players rushed to the scene and the referee intervened, tensions escalated, resulting in a verbal clash between the two teams. However, replays later indicated that Walker may have exaggerated the clash, as it appeared that Hojlund did not actually make contact with his head.
Both players received yellow cards from the referee for their unsporting behavior.
The match took place at the Etihad Stadium, and throughout the first half, players’ tempers continued to flare. Hojlund found himself in a pushing match with Erling Haaland during a few set pieces as he defended against the City striker.
Despite a lack of attacking creativity in the first half, Manchester United struggled defensively, unable to keep a clean sheet. The visitors had recently conceded three goals from corner kicks in their last two Premier League matches and repeated that mistake when Josko Gvardiol scored for City in the 36th minute.
By half-time, Manchester United had yet to register a single shot on target, leaving them in a challenging position as they headed into the second half.
