Project Punjab: From Doubt to Belief
In 2025, Ricky Ponting introduced the ambitious Project Punjab, but many were skeptical about its potential. The Punjab Kings had faced a history of inconsistency in the IPL, leading to yet another team overhaul.
Fast forward almost a year, and Ponting seems to be winning over his critics. The team’s followers are increasing, thanks in large part to standout performances on the field. The partnership of openers Priyansh Arya and Prabhsimran Singh has been electrifying, making them contenders for the best opening duo in IPL 2026.
Cooper Connolly has also settled in well, while Shreyas Iyer has emerged as a reliable chase master. The bowling lineup is strong, featuring Arshdeep Singh, Marco Jansen, and Xavier Bartlett, complemented by the experienced Yuzvendra Chahal. With these contributions, Punjab now stands proudly atop the points table.
Lucknow Super Giants: Battling Inconsistency
On the other hand, the Lucknow Super Giants have struggled, especially with their batting. Their recent loss to RCB at Chinnaswamy Stadium highlighted the team’s issues. Key players Mitchell Marsh and Aiden Markram have failed to maintain consistency, while Rishabh Pant’s performance has not matched the hefty ₹27 Crore price tag, managing just 104 runs from five matches at a slow strike rate of 122.35.
Nicholas Pooran, who shone last season, has also faltered, contributing only 42 runs from five matches after moving to the No. 5 position. However, the bowling department, led by Prince Yadav and Mohammed Shami, has shown promise with impressive performances in the powerplay.
With Mohsin Khan and Mayank Yadav close to returning to action, Lucknow hopes their bowling can help them find momentum.
Head-to-Head: A Balanced Rivalry
When it comes to the head-to-head stats, Punjab and Lucknow are evenly matched, each having won three of their six encounters. Last season, the Punjab Kings managed to outplay Lucknow in both matches.
Will Rishabh Pant Shine Against Punjab?
Rishabh Pant made headlines after the IPL 2025 auction, expressing his relief at not being picked by Punjab Kings and opting for Lucknow instead. Now, he faces the challenge of repaying the trust his team has placed in him. After sustaining a hit to the elbow from Josh Hazlewood during the recent match, there were concerns about his fitness. However, LSG’s bowling coach Bharat Arun confirmed he is ready to play.
Despite his past struggles against Punjab, where he has only scored 218 runs in 15 matches, Pant needs to step up.
Stopping the Priyansh-Prabhsimran Combination
Punjab’s bowling coach, James Hopes, praised the opening partnership of Priyansh and Prabhsimran. He noted that they might not fully realize their potential. Priyansh has amassed 118 runs in four games at an astonishing strike rate of 245.83, while Prabhsimran has scored 211 runs at 172.95.
With Shreyas Iyer adding stability with 203 runs from five matches, including three fifties, Lucknow knows they need to make early inroads to challenge Punjab effectively.

The pitch for Sunday’s match is fresh, as it hasn’t been used in the last 13 games at New Chandigarh. Weather forecasts predict hot conditions, with temperatures expected to reach 37°C, and dew possibly affecting the game later on.
