Prime Minister Modi’s Visit to Australia: Strengthening Ties and Opportunities

Melbourne, Australia – Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to land in Australia on Wednesday as part of his tour that includes three countries. This marks his third trip to Australia and his first visit to Melbourne in 12 years. His last visit to the city was in November 2014, and he last visited Australia in May 2023.

Nagesh Singh, the Indian High Commissioner to Australia, expressed optimism about the outcomes from Modi’s meetings with Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese. This visit coincides with the third annual leaders’ summit and comes after the signing of a comprehensive strategic partnership between India and Australia in 2022. Singh noted that this summit will provide a chance for both leaders to assess their current partnership and discuss future directions.

“Our relationship is rapidly growing and is one of the most significant partnerships we have,” Singh stated. “Expect announcements that will cover a broad range of topics, including defense, trade, education, and clean technologies.”

Singh emphasized that India and Australia share mutual interests and that this visit will further enhance their cooperation in the Indo-Pacific region. Both countries aim to promote a free and inclusive Indo-Pacific, working together in defense exercises and maritime awareness.

“Since signing the Economic Cooperation and Trade Agreement (ECTA) in 2022, our bilateral trade has increased by 25%, reaching nearly 54 billion Australian dollars. However, there’s still much more potential for growth,” Singh added, mentioning ongoing negotiations for a Comprehensive Economic Cooperation Agreement (CECA) that aims to create deeper economic ties.

During his visit, Modi will also engage with business leaders at a forum. This interaction is expected to strengthen partnerships in critical sectors such as minerals and supply chains, especially as India looks to transition to cleaner energy sources.

“Discussions are already underway about Australia’s rich supply of critical minerals and how we can collaborate for mutual benefit,” Singh noted.

In addition, Modi will address a vibrant community event, where he is expected to connect with the Indian diaspora in Australia, which now numbers almost one million. The event, set to take place at Marvel Arena in Melbourne, is expected to draw between 25,000 and 30,000 attendees, highlighting the significant bond between the two nations.

“The excitement is palpable as people will travel from across Australia for this event,” Singh shared. “Both Prime Ministers will speak, showcasing the importance of the Indian community in strengthening our bilateral ties.”

Lastly, Modi is expected to visit the Melbourne Cricket Ground, a key location for cricket matches between India and Australia. Singh highlighted the importance of sports in bilateral relations, noting Australia’s prowess in various sports and the upcoming opportunities, such as the 2032 Brisbane Olympics.

“This visit will focus on enhancing our collaboration in sports beyond just cricket, looking into sports medicine, technology, and infrastructure,” Singh concluded.

Prime Minister Modi arrives in Melbourne on Wednesday, a visit marked by the significant gesture of Australia’s Governor-General, Sam Mostyn, traveling to meet him—underscoring the growing maturity of India-Australia relations.
