Concerns Over E20 Fuel in E10-Compatible Vehicles
NEW DELHI: A recent report from the Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI) sheds light on the usage of E20 fuel in vehicles designed for E10. This study, which has not yet been published, indicates potential issues with rubber components in the fuel systems of these vehicles, such as hoses and seals. The findings suggest that parts like these may need replacement when using E20.
The research also stated that E20 fuel does not harm metal components and that emissions from E20 remain within legal limits for vehicles compatible with E10. However, the report raised concerns during tests conducted on a BS-VI turbocharged engine, which encountered problems after 265 hours of use with E20, while a BS-IV engine performed adequately.
Two vehicle manufacturers tested their four-wheelers, and the results were mixed. One manufacturer reported no issues after 400 hours of testing with E20, while another noticed a mechanical failure in the exhaust valve after a total of 809 hours. Experts suggest that there could be multiple reasons behind this valve failure.
Additionally, three two-wheeler manufacturers found no problems with engine performance when using E20, indicating acceptable results. The report also noted that vehicles using E20 might see fuel consumption rise by 2-6% compared to E10. However, the fuel consumption increase can vary depending on the specific vehicle.
Overall, while E20 fuel shows promise, vehicle owners may need to be cautious regarding potential impacts on rubber parts and fuel efficiency.
