93-Year-Old Referee Continues to Thrive on the Soccer Field
At 93 years old, Frank Foster is still actively refereeing soccer games in his local community, donning his red and yellow cards three times a week. With an impressive record of overseeing around 5,500 matches over 46 years, this great-grandfather attributes his remarkable fitness and stamina to a lifetime of healthy choices and a solid diet.
Growing up during wartime, Foster was raised on strict rations, which he believes helped him cultivate healthy eating habits. He often jokes, “I didn’t grow up on sweets and cakes; my diet was all about good food.” His day starts with a nutritious breakfast that includes oatmeal or toast with marmalade to fuel his energy for the full 90 minutes of play.
Foster remains a busy referee, handling men’s, women’s, and children’s games, and he’s determined never to retire from the field. His mental sharpness matches his physical endurance, helping him maintain control on the pitch.
A military veteran, Foster scored 98% on his referee exam back in 1980. He employs traditional discipline to keep the games running smoothly, believing that many current officials are too lenient with players’ antics. Before the match begins, he lays out firm rules to ensure everyone knows who’s in charge. He’s particularly strict about players attempting to surround him on the field, stating, “If they don’t stay back, they risk a yellow card.”
Foster also shies away from modern stressors like video reviews, which he feels can lead to unnecessary tension over minute offside calls. “Sometimes it’s just a player’s toe that is offside,” he says, calling it ridiculous.
Despite his age, Foster never imagined he would still be officiating matches at 93. He takes pride in his appearance, ensuring his referee kit is always neat and clean. After each game, he meticulously cleans his black Adidas boots, ready for the next challenge on the field.
Living in South Yorkshire, England, Foster proves that age is just a number when it comes to pursuing passions and staying active.
