Concerns Raised Over Uninspected Iranian Nuclear Site
A prominent American research institute recently expressed serious concerns about Iran’s underground nuclear site located in the Zagros Mountains, known as Pickaxe Mountain. The site remains off-limits to inspectors from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), casting doubt on Iran’s commitment to nuclear agreements.
The facility, which is heavily fortified, raises questions about Iran’s intentions and its adherence to the previous commitments made during negotiations with the Trump administration. In response to these worries, the U.S. and Israel initiated Operation Epic Fury on February 28, 2026, aimed at curbing Iran’s nuclear ambitions.
Experts from the Institute for Science and International Security (ISIS), based in Washington, highlight that allowing IAEA inspectors access to Pickaxe Mountain and halting construction would serve as a significant gesture from Iran. This move could potentially demonstrate Iran’s sincerity in adhering to international obligations.
Spencer Faragasso, a senior fellow at ISIS, noted that continual activities at Pickaxe Mountain since 2020 indicate Iran may be preparing for a possible failure in negotiations, establishing a nuclear facility that could be near completion. Faragasso called for Iran to halt construction as a sign of good faith, questioning the regime’s reliability in the negotiation process.
Iran has previously enriched uranium at its facilities in Natanz, Fordow, and Isfahan, which is essential for developing nuclear weapons. Continuing construction at Pickaxe Mountain further complicates diplomatic efforts.
Satellite images released by ISIS show ongoing vehicle activity and construction work at the site, despite the limits set by the memorandum of understanding (MOU) between Iran and the United States. The MOU explicitly mandates that Iran must maintain the status quo, which should include stopping construction at nuclear facilities like Pickaxe Mountain.
As of late June 2026, the IAEA has not clarified whether it will pursue access to the facility. The latest satellite imagery reveals limited activity at Natanz, with many entrances still damaged, reflecting a lack of transparency in Iran’s nuclear operations.
In recent talks between the U.S. and Iran, disputes regarding the control of potentially unfrozen Iranian assets emerged, indicating the complexity of the negotiations. The situation at Fordow, another nuclear site, also demands attention, with the institute noting additional defensive measures taken by Iran to secure its tunnels.
The ongoing developments underscore the importance of international scrutiny in ensuring compliance with nuclear agreements, as the global community continues to monitor Iran’s activities closely.
