Cricket News: T20 Match Abandoned Due to Rain
Chester-le-Street, England — The first T20 match of a five-game series between England and India was called off on Wednesday due to heavy rain, with play unable to resume after India posted a strong total of 189-7.
Indian captain Shreyas Iyer led the way with an impressive 68 runs, while opener Abhishek Sharma contributed 59. The team chose to bat first after winning the toss. Allrounder Shivam Dube added a quick-fire 42 runs off just 21 balls, hitting three sixes and two fours, helping push India’s score closer to 200. On the England side, Saqib Mahmood stood out with figures of 3-33, including the early dismissal of opener Sanju Samson for just 1 run.
India faced early trouble when Ishan Kishan was run out for a duck, leaving them at 6-2. However, the team bounced back well. Unfortunately, rain disrupted the game, and play was abandoned around 8:15 p.m. local time.
The second T20 is set to take place in Manchester on Saturday.
Despite a disappointing 2-0 series defeat in Ireland, India opted not to debut 15-year-old prodigy Vaibhav Sooryavanshi in this match. The young talent had a standout performance in the 2026 Indian Premier League, scoring 776 runs in 16 innings and being named MVP. Yet, he continues to face competition from established players like Samson and Sharma for a spot in the lineup.
If Sooryavanshi debuts later in the series, he would break records, becoming the youngest player to participate in a major men’s T20 match. The current record is held by Ireland’s Joshua Little, who debuted at 16 years and 309 days old. Also, he would set a new record for India’s senior men’s team, previously held by the legendary Sachin Tendulkar, who debuted at 16 years and 205 days in 1989.
The youngest player ever in men’s international cricket remains Hasan Raza, who made his test debut for Pakistan at just 14 years and 227 days.
Stay tuned for more updates on this exciting series!
