Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri Receives Extension
In a recent announcement, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri has been granted a one-year extension in his role. This decision was made on Wednesday, following a previous 19-month extension beyond his original retirement date of November 30, 2024. The new extension, approved by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet, will now keep him in the position until July 14, 2027.
Misri took on the role of Foreign Secretary in June 2024. Before this, he served as the Deputy National Security Adviser and succeeded Vinay Mohan Kwatra, who is currently India’s ambassador to the United States.
A seasoned diplomat, Misri has held various important positions within the Ministry of External Affairs and at Indian embassies around the world, including in Europe, Africa, Asia, and North America. Notably, he has been private secretary to three former Prime Ministers: IK Gujral, Manmohan Singh, and Narendra Modi.
Born in Srinagar in 1964, Misri completed his early education in Gwalior. He earned his Bachelor’s degree in history from Hindu College at Delhi University and later obtained an MBA from XLRI. Prior to his current role, Misri also served as India’s ambassador to Spain from 2014 to 2016 and to Myanmar from 2016 to 2018, among other significant postings.
