Pope Leo XIV Issues Warning on Traditionalist Group’s Plans
In a strong message, Pope Leo XIV reached out to the Society of St. Pius X, urging them not to go ahead with their plan to consecrate four bishops without Vatican approval. He described this action as a “serious sin” that could further divide the Church.
In a heartfelt letter to Rev. Davide Pagliarani, the leader of the Society, the Pope asked the group to rethink their intentions before a scheduled ceremony in Econe, Switzerland. He emphasized that this move would separate the bishops from the Church’s communion.
“I sincerely urge you: please reconsider!” the Pope said in his letter.
A Call for Unity
The Pope also addressed the spiritual well-being of the faithful, highlighting that the upcoming consecration could prevent them from receiving legitimate sacraments. Under Church law, ordaining bishops without papal permission is considered a major offense that can lead to automatic excommunication for everyone involved.
This situation marks a significant challenge for Pope Leo XIV, who has focused on healing divisions within the Church. Traditionalist groups, particularly the Society of St. Pius X, have resisted many modern reforms initiated after the Second Vatican Council, including the use of local languages in Mass.
Despite dialogue with the Vatican over the years, the Society remains outside the formal structure of the Church. They argue that they need to provide bishops for their followers due to a “state of necessity.”
This recent controversy reminds many of a similar event in 1988, when the Society’s founder, Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre, ordained bishops without Vatican consent, leading to excommunications that were later lifted in 2009 as part of reconciliation efforts.
As the Pope calls for reflection and unity, the eyes of the faithful and the broader community are on the Society’s next steps.
