Morgan’s Journey: A Personal Story of Heart Health
Morgan Almer is an avid sports enthusiast—with baseball being his top passion. He dreams of visiting every Major League Baseball stadium in the country, having already explored 22 out of 30.
Before his diagnosis, Morgan felt completely healthy. His heart condition was discovered during a routine annual check-up, where everything seemed normal.
Tragically, Morgan lost his father to a heart attack at the age of 63. Following this loss, his wife encouraged him to get a heart screening, which he finally agreed to after consulting with his doctor.
He underwent a cardiac calcium test, which evaluates heart health. The results revealed a concerning score of 1815, far above the 400 threshold for high risk. Morgan was referred to Dr. Sarov, who believed additional testing was necessary. An angiogram was suggested, revealing serious blockages—100%, 80%, and 55%.
When Dr. Canver reviewed the angiogram, he presented Morgan with two choices: do nothing, which would likely lead to a heart attack, or proceed with a triple bypass surgery. Morgan chose the surgery, which lasted nearly eight hours.
Afterward, he entered Essentia’s Cardiac Rehab program, where he received guidance and support to regain his strength. The rehab team was instrumental in helping him walk and bike again, all while ensuring his heart was carefully monitored.
What stood out to Morgan during his treatment was the genuine care from his medical team. He expressed gratitude for Dr. Mertz, who promptly ordered tests, and reflected on the unique bond he shares with Dr. Canver, the only person to physically hold his heart in such a critical way.
Morgan wholeheartedly recommends Essentia Health, stating, “They gave me a second chance, and not everyone is fortunate enough to receive that.”
