SBI Life Insurance Joins Forces with IIT Bombay to Launch Bharat Innovation Hub
MUMBAI, India — June 30, 2026 — In a significant move to enhance the protection of financial data in India, SBI Life Insurance, a leading private life insurer, has teamed up with the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT Bombay). They have entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to create the “Bharat Innovation Hub for Insurance.” This research and innovation center will focus on developing advanced tech solutions, specifically tailored for the insurance industry.
The MoU was signed by Prof. S.V. Kulkarni, Dean of Research and Development at IIT Bombay, and Mr. Vishal Bhatia, Chief Information and Digital Officer at SBI Life, in the presence of key stakeholders including Prof. Shireesh B. Kedare, Director of IIT Bombay, and other senior officials from both organizations.
With India’s insurance market expected to grow at an annual rate of 6.9% until 2030, securing customer data has never been more critical. As customer data increases, so does the need for robust protection measures. The establishment of the Bharat Innovation Hub represents a strategic move towards developing homegrown cyber defense solutions, lessening reliance on foreign security frameworks.
In line with the government’s vision for a self-reliant India, known as ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’, this initiative aims to combine SBI Life’s industry insights with IIT Bombay’s academic expertise. Together, they will work on solutions in areas like artificial intelligence, cyber security, and quantum technology to drive innovation in the insurance sector.
This partnership is a notable step for SBI Life towards becoming what is termed an “AI-native insurer.” By not just using technology, but actively creating it, SBI Life aims to deliver scalable and resilient solutions that meet the demands of both customers and regulatory bodies in an ever-evolving digital landscape.
During the signing event, Mr. Abhijit Gulanikar, President of Operations and IT at SBI Life, remarked, “The future of financial services will be shaped by those who lead in technology creation. Collaborating with some of India’s best minds allows us to innovate and build for the Indian market.”
Prof. Ganesh Ramakrishnan from IIT Bombay also emphasized the importance of this collaboration, stating, “Our goal is to tackle pressing challenges in society. With this partnership, we can directly address the financial security of citizens by fusing academia with practical industry applications in important tech domains. We’re proud to work with SBI Life to boost India’s ability to foster its own technological advancements.”
The Bharat Innovation Hub aims to benefit not just SBI Life, but also the broader financial services sector. By fostering cooperation between academia and industry, the hub intends to develop local talent in AI and cyber security, readying India against digital threats while creating a scalable collaborative model for the industry.
As the landscape of insurance in India transforms, the focus on developing homegrown technological defense capabilities is more crucial than ever. This partnership signifies a long-term commitment to enhancing India’s capacity in this vital area through innovative and research-driven efforts.
