Palo Alto Networks CEO Nikesh Arora: “Mass Layoffs Aren’t the Answer—Here’s Why”

Tech Leader Pushes for Strategic Hiring Amid Job Cuts

As major tech companies like Amazon, Google, and Meta are implementing widespread layoffs, Nikesh Arora, CEO of Palo Alto Networks, is advocating for a different approach. In a recent podcast interview, he emphasized that cutting jobs is not the right answer for addressing the talent shortage in the tech industry.

Arora, who leads a cybersecurity firm valued at $235 billion, highlighted a pressing issue: most employees lack the necessary skills for the AI-driven future. He stated, “The challenge right now is that 90% of enterprise employees are not AI savvy,” pointing out the significant skills gap in the workforce.

The Challenge for Workers

Arora believes the shift to AI poses unique challenges because traditional training programs are unable to keep up with rapid technological changes. He mentioned that there’s no formal training course available to equip his 21,000 employees with the necessary skills, leaving it up to individuals to learn on their own. “We’re in a Darwinian moment where everyone has to show what they are capable of,” he noted. He expressed concern that many tech leaders opt to lay off employees rather than invest in retraining them.

He cited leaders like Brian Armstrong from Coinbase and Jack Dorsey from Block, who have significantly reduced their teams instead of promoting skill development.

A Different Approach at Palo Alto

Unlike others, Palo Alto Networks is taking a more measured approach. Instead of abrupt layoffs, the company is utilizing natural attrition to gradually adjust its workforce. Arora shared a refreshing strategy for hiring new talent: “We’ve started hiring only through hackathons. In a year, I hope to transform about 20-25% of my team with skilled individuals.”

This method not only encourages innovation but also helps the company build a workforce better equipped for the challenges of AI. Recent financial reports indicate that Palo Alto Networks has actually grown, adding over 5,400 employees between the end of fiscal 2025 and the third quarter of 2026.

In summary, while some companies are opting for quick fixes through layoffs, Arora believes that thoughtful hiring and development can lead to a more resilient workforce for the future.
