Severe Weather Hits FIFA World Cup Match
Weather conditions made a big impact during the FIFA World Cup on Monday as the match between France and Iraq faced delays due to storms. Concerns about the weather arrived early in the day, leading to a Flood Watch being issued around 2 p.m. Eastern Time for intense rain and thunderstorms in Philadelphia. As a precaution, stadium officials temporarily stopped fans from entering until conditions improved, and the match eventually kicked off at 5 p.m. local time.
Rain began to pour heavily about half an hour into the game, but the match continued despite the worsening weather. However, as thunderstorms got closer during the halftime break, fans were advised to move to safety areas in the stadium.
France was ahead 1-0 at halftime, thanks to a goal from Kylian Mbappe, but officials announced that the start of the second half would be delayed due to safety concerns. According to tournament rules, if lightning is detected within an eight-mile radius, play must be paused for at least 30 minutes. This meant both players and fans faced a longer wait before resuming the game.
The weather issues weren’t confined to Philadelphia. In New York City, bad weather led to a travel advisory for the evening match between Norway and Senegal, sparking worries about further delays at World Cup venues across the U.S.
This isn’t the first time bad weather has affected soccer matches in the United States. Last year, during the Club World Cup, weather problems caused six games to be postponed, resulting in a total of eight and a half hours of delays. A match between Chelsea and Dortmund saw the longest interruptions, lasting nearly four and a half hours at Charlotte’s Bank of America Stadium. Similarly, England’s warm-up match against Costa Rica was delayed by an hour due to nearby lightning.
Understanding the Weather Delay Rules
The protocol for managing thunderstorms in the U.S. states that play must stop whenever there’s lightning within eight miles of the stadium. During these events, spectators are directed to safe areas, while players and officials return to their locker rooms.
Before the game can restart, there must be no lightning detected for at least 30 minutes straight. If lightning occurs during that wait, the countdown to restart begins anew.
It’s important to note that FIFA doesn’t control this weather protocol and cannot change it.
