England Announces 17-Player Squad for T20I Series Against India
England has released a 17-player squad for their upcoming T20I series against India, with Harry Brook at the helm. A notable inclusion is the uncapped all-rounder James Coles, who has impressed with his outstanding performances for the England Lions and in various domestic T20 leagues. Over 71 T20 matches, Coles has accumulated 1,373 runs, averaging 28.60, and taken 53 wickets with an economy rate of 8.27.
Coles solidified his spot in the team after scoring an impressive unbeaten 224 for Sussex during a County Championship match against Glamorgan in Hove earlier this month. National selector Marcus North mentioned Coles as a key player, recognizing his consistency over the past year in different formats and competitions.
“James Coles is a thrilling addition to our squad. His performances with the England Lions and in various T20 competitions have rightfully earned him this opportunity,” North stated.
Cox, Baker, and Mahmood Make Comebacks
The selected squad showcases a mix of youthful talent and seasoned players. Jordan Cox, Sonny Baker, and Saqib Mahmood are returning to the team after missing the recent Men’s T20 World Cup. However, Brydon Carse and Jamie Overton will miss out due to injuries, which will require some adjustments to the team structure.
With Jofra Archer and Sam Curran, the squad gains significant strength both with bat and ball. Jos Buttler, Phil Salt, and Tom Banton will enhance the wicketkeeping and top-order capabilities. Rehan Ahmed, Adil Rashid, and Liam Dawson will offer solid options in spin, while all-rounders Will Jacks and Jacob Bethell contribute additional versatility.
North, a former Australian cricketer, emphasized that the larger squad size gives them flexibility, especially since the series begins soon after England finishes their Test series against New Zealand.
“We’ve opted for a larger squad to ensure flexibility as this series follows closely on the heels of our Test commitments against New Zealand,” North explained.
The five-match T20I series between England and India is set to take place in Chester-le-Street, Manchester, Nottingham, Bristol, and Southampton, starting on July 1 and concluding on July 11 at the Utilita Bowl.
