Myanmar’s Military Leader Visits India to Strengthen Ties
BANGKOK – The head of Myanmar’s military-backed government, Min Aung Hlaing, arrived in India on Saturday for an official visit aimed at enhancing the relationship between the two nations. This is his first trip to India since taking office as president in April, following a controversial election criticized for solidifying military control. His previous visit was in 2019 when he was still the military chief.
Despite facing international sanctions after Myanmar’s military seized power from the elected government of Aung San Suu Kyi in 2021, India has continued its engagement with Myanmar’s military leadership. This ongoing relationship has persisted amid escalating conflicts and a humanitarian crisis within Myanmar.
Min Aung Hlaing landed in India at Gaya International Airport, located in Bihar, a region known for its significant Buddhist pilgrimage sites. His itinerary includes meetings with Indian President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, along with discussions with various government officials and business leaders. The talks will focus on enhancing cooperation in economic, cultural, and social fields.
Accompanied by members of his Cabinet, Min Aung Hlaing is expected to visit key infrastructure projects during his trip. India shares a long border with Myanmar and has a maritime boundary in the Bay of Bengal. Thousands of refugees from Myanmar, fleeing violence, are currently sheltered in India.
This visit has raised concerns among critics who believe it could further legitimize the military government. Yadanar Maung, a spokesperson for the Justice For Myanmar activist group, condemned India’s decision to host Min Aung Hlaing, labeling him a war criminal. She urged India to reassess its support for the military and instead back the Myanmar people in their struggle for democracy.
