Ravi Shastri Weighs In on Rohit Sharma’s Batting Position for Adelaide Test

Former India cricketer and head coach Ravi Shastri has shared his insights regarding whether Rohit Sharma should adjust his batting position in the upcoming Adelaide Test. Rohit is making his comeback to the squad after missing the first Test to welcome his child, leaving the team with a bit of a dilemma.

KL Rahul filled in for Rohit as the opener in the first Test held in Perth, showcasing his skills with an impressive score of 77. With Rohit back in the lineup, there’s a chance he might have to bat lower down the order. Shastri emphasized that Rohit brings significant experience and talent to the team, no matter where he bats.

"It’s a great advantage for India because Rohit is a quality player. His experience is crucial, especially in the middle order. The team comprises a good mix of youth and experience, so he can choose if he wants to open or bat in the middle order. He’s seasoned enough to understand where he can be most effective in Australia," Shastri commented during an interview on ICC Review.

Adding to his thoughts, Shastri suggested that KL Rahul should continue to open the innings since Rohit hasn’t spent much time acclimating to the conditions in Australia.

"Where would the Australian bowlers feel the most challenged? That’s the spot Rohit should choose. As a leader, he can make that call. I believe Rahul should stick to opening because Rohit still needs to get his bearings after arriving in Australia. He played a practice match very quickly, and I think keeping the same batting lineup works best. Rohit can slot in at five or six," Shastri added.

Rohit’s Warm-Up Match Performance

Rohit Sharma faced some struggles in a recent warm-up match against the Prime Minister’s XI, where he was dismissed cheaply. He opted to let KL Rahul open, who had already shown his capability in the first Test. Rohit was cautious at the crease, trying to adapt to the challenging swinging conditions under lights, but he was out for just 3 runs off 11 balls, edging a delivery from Charlie Anderson to the wicketkeeper.

Recently, Rahul expressed his flexibility about batting positions, stating he is comfortable playing anywhere in the lineup as long as he secures a spot in the first XI. It remains to be seen what decision the team management will make regarding Rahul’s position in the batting order for the Adelaide Test.
