Iran Voices Concerns Over Somaliland’s Rise as a Strategic Base for the US and Israel

Somaliland Raises Concerns for Iran Amid Growing U.S. Interest

Iran appears to feel threatened by Somaliland, a small self-declared state in Africa, due to its potential as a base for U.S., Israeli, and other Western military presence. This development could disrupt Iran’s plans to use Yemen’s Houthi militants to threaten shipping routes in the Red Sea, particularly through the Bab-el-Mandeb Strait.

The Bab-el-Mandeb Strait has become crucial for shipping oil from the Middle East to Asia, especially after tensions at the Strait of Hormuz. According to reports, Iran has been pressuring the Houthis to ramp up attacks on maritime traffic in this area.

Somaliland as a Potential U.S. Stronghold?

Experts suggest that Somaliland could become a key U.S. foothold against Iran and the Houthis. Lisa Daftari, a Middle East expert, noted that Iran fears the rise of a pro-Western presence that could weaken its influence in the region. The Houthis have already indicated they might strike any Israeli or Western military presence in Somaliland if tensions escalate with the U.S. or Israel.

The U.S. has stated that Iran’s proxies, including the Houthis, are facing setbacks. With recent military strategies aimed at this region, officials claim Iran is struggling economically, which could alter the dynamics of negotiations involving the U.S.

A Unique Opportunity for Somaliland

Somaliland recently gained international recognition from Israel, a move that has frustrated Iran. Edmund Fitton-Brown, a former ambassador to Yemen, explained that Iran’s opposition is rooted in its longstanding animosity towards Israel and its partners, including the U.S. and the UAE. Somaliland represents a possible base for initiatives against Iranian-aligned forces in the region.

The U.S. currently has a significant base in Djibouti, but concerns about China’s expanding presence there have led officials to consider Somaliland as a reliable alternative. Somaliland’s Foreign Minister, Abdirahman Dahir Adam, emphasized the region’s strategic importance, especially as threats to Red Sea shipping increase.

Somaliland’s Offer to the U.S.

Somaliland is offering to provide access to its coast for U.S. military operations, including storage for advanced weaponry like tomahawk missiles. This could enhance the U.S.’s ability to secure key global trade routes, particularly for destroyers needing resupply.

However, the relationship with Somaliland is complex. Maj. Gen. (Ret.) Kenneth P. Ekman cautioned that direct military cooperation could complicate U.S. relations with the Somali federal government.

Calls for Recognition of Somaliland

Senator Ted Cruz has been vocal about recognizing Somaliland as an independent state, arguing that its strategic location and willingness to partner with the U.S. make it a valuable ally in counter-terrorism efforts.

Despite the historical ties to Somalia, recent actions suggest a shift toward a more active U.S. military presence in Somaliland. U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM) has been conducting operations and is reportedly working closely with Somaliland’s security forces.

Overall, Somaliland’s strategic position and its offers to the U.S. may prove crucial in the ongoing regional tensions, providing a new avenue for American influence in East Africa while countering Iranian activities.
