Meta’s Recent Layoffs: Key Information for Affected Employees
Earlier this month, Meta announced significant layoffs, affecting nearly 8,000 employees. The process began in Singapore at 4 AM local time, where workers received notifications about their job status.
In the midst of these cuts, Meta expressed its commitment to shifting over 7,000 employees towards new initiatives focused on artificial intelligence. A memo sent to those impacted recognized the challenges faced by workers on H-1B visas, offering helpful immigration guidance to assist them during this uncertain time. The memo directed affected employees to Meta’s Alumni Portal, which provides access to legal support and allows them to ask specific questions regarding their situations.
What Meta Shared with H-1B Visa Employees
The memo understood the difficulties for employees holding H-1B visas, stating: “We know this is especially difficult for those whose visa and work authorization is sponsored by Meta. The Alumni Portal has general immigration guidance to help address your immediate questions.” It also included contact information for a law firm assigned to assist those affected.
The guidance available on the Alumni Portal enables employees to seek assistance regarding their specific cases.
Severance Details for Laid-off Employees
The memo outlined the severance benefits for Full-Time Employees (FTEs) impacted by the layoffs. Eligible employees can expect:
- A severance payment of 16 weeks plus two additional weeks for each year of service, adjusted for the notice period.
- Coverage of health insurance premiums through COBRA for 18 months for the employee and their dependent family members.
To receive the severance payment, employees will need to sign a “Separation Agreement.” Those who do not receive the agreement can submit inquiries via the Alumni Portal for further assistance.
Meta is trying to support its workforce during these challenging changes, ensuring affected employees have access to the resources they need.
