Tragic Train Accident in Belgium Claims Lives of Four, Including Two Children

A passenger train collided with a minibus carrying children in Buggenhout, Belgium, on Tuesday morning, resulting in the deaths of four individuals, including two young children. The accident has left five other children in critical condition.

The crash took place around 20 miles northwest of Brussels and is being called one of the worst railway incidents in Belgium’s recent history. According to authorities, the minibus drove through a closed railway crossing just moments before it was struck by a train traveling at approximately 75 mph. Surveillance footage showed the bus crossing the tracks before the incident.

There were nine people on the minibus. Sadly, the driver, an escort, and two children aged 12 and 15 lost their lives. The five surviving children were rushed to the hospital with serious injuries.

Officials reported that the railway barrier was down and the warning lights were flashing at the time of the accident. An investigation is currently underway to understand the exact circumstances leading to the crash.

Federal police spokesperson An Berger noted that it seemed the driver ignored the closed crossing barrier. The Belgian rail operator, Infrabel, confirmed that the crossing systems were functioning properly during the incident. Frédéric Sacré, a spokesperson for Infrabel, described the impact as “extremely violent” and stated that the train had no time to brake before crashing.

Witnesses observed the wreckage, with the minibus overturned and its front end severely crushed, while the train sustained relatively minor damage. Fortunately, around 100 passengers on the train were unharmed.

Belgian Prime Minister Bart De Wever expressed his sorrow over the tragic accident, offering condolences to the affected families through a social media message. Emergency services worked quickly at the scene, which caused a suspension of rail traffic in the area.

The entire community mourns this heartbreaking loss, with many leaving floral tributes at the accident site.
