Iconic Roadside Thermometer Up for Sale Near Las Vegas

A famous roadside attraction, the towering thermometer located between Las Vegas and Los Angeles, is now on the market. This notable landmark, which stands at 134 feet, is situated in Baker, California, just about 90 miles from the Las Vegas Strip, and is listed for $1.85 million.

The impressive thermometer, known as the tallest in the world, is part of a 4.3-acre property that also houses a souvenir shop named Temp 134. This temperature display proudly marks Baker as the gateway to Death Valley, where the highest recorded temperature on Earth, a scorching 134 degrees, was observed in 1913.

Baron Castillo, a real estate broker and owner of Apartment Building Investments, recently shared that the thermometer has been refurbished and is functioning better than ever. He believes a buyer will likely come from Las Vegas, as the site attracts numerous travelers driving along Interstate 15 between Southern Nevada and Southern California.

In addition to the thermometer, the land for sale includes an electric vehicle (EV) charging station. Castillo mentioned that a buyer could enhance the site by adding digital signage on the thermometer to feature their brand. There’s also potential to transform the souvenir shop into a restaurant, cafe, or microbrewery, providing a welcoming stop for visitors while they recharge their vehicles.

Baker is a small unincorporated community in San Bernardino County, covering just 2.7 square miles and home to only 442 residents as of the last census in 2020. The famous thermometer was constructed in 1991 but faced a setback when high winds knocked it over before it was switched on. It was eventually rebuilt, stronger and more wind-resistant, and lit up for the first time in 1992.

Along I-15, the gigantic thermometer isn’t the sole attraction. Other notable sights include the unique Zzyzx Road sign and an abandoned waterpark, both just a short drive from Las Vegas.

As interest grows in unique roadside attractions, this towering thermometer could be the perfect opportunity for someone looking to invest in a piece of quirky Americana.
