Jofra Archer Unfazed by Criticism, Says Rajasthan Royals Coach
Trevor Penney, the assistant coach of Rajasthan Royals, shared that fast bowler Jofra Archer is not letting criticism affect him as the debate over player commitments for the IPL and international cricket continues. Prominent figures like former England captains Michael Atherton and Michael Vaughan have expressed their concerns regarding the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) allowing Archer to play in the IPL instead of preparing for the upcoming Test against New Zealand.
Atherton highlighted the ongoing tension between franchise leagues and national teams, urging caution as Archer returns from a lengthy injury absence. Vaughan took a stronger stance, stating that allowing players to focus on the IPL could undermine England’s central contract system.
In a pre-match discussion ahead of Rajasthan’s game against the Mumbai Indians, Penney said that Archer is focused on his cricket. He mentioned that Archer rarely speaks about the criticism and is continuing with his routine without letting outside opinions disturb him.
“I’ve seen some of the articles, and it’s interesting because the IPL is such a significant tournament. If he happens to miss one game for England, that’s just part of it. That’s how he sees it,” Penney explained. “It doesn’t really bother him, and the team hasn’t discussed it much.”
Penney also pointed out that there are challenges when balancing commitments between the IPL and international matches. “You can stay here and create tension with the England side or leave and risk upsetting fans here,” he noted.
Managing Archer’s Comeback
The ECB is taking a careful approach to Jofra Archer’s return after a series of elbow and stress injuries that have sidelined him since 2021. He has recently begun to play consistently across all formats but remains under close monitoring.
Archer will not be part of the squad for the first Test against New Zealand to ease back into red-ball cricket gradually.
For the Rajasthan Royals, their next match at Wankhede Stadium is crucial. They must win to secure their playoff position without relying on net run rate; a loss could lead to their exit from the tournament.
