U.S. Arrests Sister of Cuban Business Executive Linked to Government

The U.S. government has apprehended Adys Lastres Morera, the sister of the executive president of GAESA, a large company operated by the Cuban military. The arrest was made due to her alleged connections with the Cuban government.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated on social media that GAESA has been accused of misusing millions of dollars that were intended to support the Cuban people, acting on orders from the regime.

Morera was taken into custody by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) after her lawful permanent residency was revoked by the State Department. She had been managing real estate in Florida while reportedly supporting Havana’s communist government.

Rubio, who directed the termination of her residency status, mentioned that Morera’s role has been significant in aiding the regime. She entered the U.S. as a legal permanent resident in 2023.

Her sister, Ania Guillermina Lastres Morera, who heads GAESA, was sanctioned recently for her position in the company, which critics describe as exploitative, draining resources from the Cuban populace.

Rubio expressed concern over the dire situation in Cuba, highlighting issues like frequent blackouts and severe shortages of essential supplies. He noted that while the Cuban people struggle, GAESA appears to allocate its wealth not for the public good, but for the benefit of a small group of elites.

In his remarks, Rubio emphasized the need for change in leadership in Cuba, citing that current resources are not used to improve conditions for ordinary Cubans but rather to support the government’s oppressive efforts.

As the situation evolves, many continue to watch how these developments will affect relations between the U.S. and Cuba.
