Punch the Monkey Finds New Friends after Viral Moment

Punch, a young macaque from Japan, has captured hearts online after a touching video showed him seeking companionship—this time not with his favorite stuffed toy but with a fellow monkey. The clip features Punch climbing onto another monkey’s back, engaging in what’s known as a “piggyback ride,” a behavior important for young macaques’ social development. Punch first gained fame after being born last year and later abandoned by his mother.

In a troubling twist, two American nationals were arrested near the Ichikawa City Zoo on Sunday. One of them reportedly entered Punch’s enclosure dressed in an emoji costume. Video footage shows the individual dropping a small stuffed toy inside, which startled the monkeys. The suspects, a 24-year-old college student and a 27-year-old aspiring singer, were arrested on suspicions of disrupting the zoo’s operations.

Zoo staff quickly acted to ensure no monkeys were harmed, and it’s reported that the two men did not physically interact with the animals. The Ichikawa Police mentioned that one suspect has not cooperated with the investigation, while the other has denied the claims.

In a statement, the zoo confirmed they had turned the duo over to authorities and conducted safety checks afterward. For now, they announced temporary closures of some viewing areas and increased security measures.

Punch, who was raised by zookeepers after his abandonment, became a social media sensation when he was given a stuffed orangutan toy for comfort. This adorable gesture has made him a beloved figure both in the zoo and online, reminding us of the joy and resilience of young animals.
