Sorana Cirstea’s Inspiring Farewell Season

Sorana Cirstea is making her mark in what she has announced will be her final season on the tennis circuit. The 36-year-old Romanian player has had an incredible journey, especially with her impressive performance at the Italian Open. Now ranked No. 18 in the world, she has become the oldest player to debut in the WTA Top 20, showcasing her remarkable resilience and skill.

Starting the tournament outside the top ranks, Cirstea quickly captured everyone’s attention. A highlight of her run in Rome was her shocking victory against world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka in the third round. After losing the first set 2-6, she staged a fantastic comeback, winning the next two sets 6-3, 7-5, marking her first win over a top-ranked player and breaking Sabalenka’s strong streak at WTA 1000 events.

Cirstea continued her form with two impressive straight-set victories against Linda Noskova and Jelena Ostapenko, propelling her into the semi-finals.

However, her journey ended in the semi-finals where she faced off against American rising star Coco Gauff, who defeated her 6-4, 6-3.

Cirstea’s Remarkable Season Continues

Cirstea’s performance in Rome is part of a broader resurgence this farewell season. Earlier in 2026, she won a WTA title at the Winners Open in Romania and has maintained one of her best win-loss records in recent years. It seems that her decision to retire has allowed her to play with a new sense of freedom and energy.

In the quarter-finals against Ostapenko, Cirstea delivered a standout performance. She dominated the first set with a score of 6-1, using powerful baseline shots and solid returns to keep her opponent on the back foot. When Ostapenko upped her game in the second set, Cirstea held strong, staying calm during long rallies and clinching a tense tiebreak 7-6(0) with impressive precision.

In her match against Coco Gauff, Cirstea started strong, using her forehand to take control of rallies. However, Gauff’s exceptional movement and consistency turned the tide. Cirstea pushed for risky shots, which led to some crucial mistakes. Despite showing her talent, she couldn’t maintain her level, leading to Gauff’s straightforward win.

As Cirstea continues her last season, fans look forward to seeing how she finishes her career on the court.
