Egypt Makes World Cup History with Penalty Shootout Win Against Australia
In a thrilling match on Friday, Egypt made sports history by defeating Australia 4-2 in a penalty shootout after the game ended in a 1-1 draw, securing their spot in the FIFA World Cup Round of 16 for the very first time.
The decisive moment came when Hossam Abdelmaguid stepped up to take the final penalty, successfully converting it after Australia stumbled with two missed shots, marking a significant victory for the Egyptian team.
The match began with Egypt taking the lead in the 13th minute when Emam Ashour scored with a powerful header from a cross by Karim Hafez, making it the tournament’s 250th goal. However, Australia equalized ten minutes into the second half when Mohamed Hany accidentally directed Aiden O’Neill’s free-kick into his own net, which was unfortunately his second own goal of the tournament.
Egypt showed remarkable composure during the penalty shootout, achieving their first-ever knockout victory in World Cup history. They will now face the winner of the Round of 32 match between defending champions Argentina and World Cup newcomers Cabo Verde in Atlanta on Tuesday.
