Prodip Hazarika: A Veteran Politician Eyes Sivasagar in 2026 Elections

Prodip Hazarika, a seasoned leader from the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and a significant figure in Assam’s political landscape, is gearing up to contest the 2026 Assembly elections from the Sivasagar constituency. Hazarika, who has been a key player since the regional movement of the 1980s, is regarded as one of the most reliable members of his party.

With the recent redrawing of electoral boundaries in 2023, which led to the dissolution of his long-held Amguri seat, Hazarika has shifted his focus to Sivasagar. His campaign is seen as a crucial test of local resilience and aims to highlight the importance of having a strong “Local Voice” in the assembly. He plans to address pressing issues related to tea garden welfare, rural infrastructure, and indigenous rights in his campaign.

Early Life and Political Journey

Born in 1953, Prodip Hazarika is the son of the late Gonesh Hazarika. He became actively involved in the Assam Movement from 1979 to 1985 and transitioned into politics when the AGP was formed after the Assam Accord in 1985. Unlike many of his contemporaries who joined national parties, Hazarika has remained loyal to the AGP for over 40 years. He boasts a postgraduate degree and has been deeply involved in local organizational work in Upper Assam prior to his political career.

Sivasagar Contest Details

Hazarika’s previous stronghold was the Amguri constituency, but due to the boundary changes, he has officially filed his nomination for Sivasagar. His nomination affidavit was uploaded in March 2026, marking his new political chapter.

In the upcoming elections, Hazarika faces strong competition from Pranjal Gohain from the Congress party and Diganta Saikia from the BJP. His campaign focuses on his history of “Constituency Development,” as he promises to modernize tea garden infrastructure and secure land rights for farmers. If re-elected, Hazarika aims to promote the preservation of Sivasagar’s cultural heritage and improve irrigation systems in the area.

Key Opponents

  • Akhil Gogoi (Raijor Dal): A notable opponent and current MLA, Gogoi was elected while in prison in 2021. He strongly criticizes both the BJP and the AGP and campaigns as a true representative of the local community.

  • Kushal Dowari (BJP): In an unusual scenario, the BJP has nominated Dowari against their own ally, the AGP. Dowari, a former two-time MLA, is known for his prior links with the ULFA. This unique matchup has created a dynamic three-cornered race.

Past Election Performances

Hazarika has had a successful political career, winning multiple times, including in 1985, 1996, 2006, and 2016. He has consistently maintained a strong voter base, even amidst challenges from national parties.

In the 2021 Assembly elections, Hazarika successfully won the Amguri seat, securing 49,891 votes (48%) and defeating Congress candidate Angkita Dutta. Despite losing his traditional seat due to the recent delimitation, he remains a significant political figure in the district, vying for a win under the new electoral map.

Polling for the Sivasagar constituency was completed on April 9, 2026, with Hazarika hopeful that his deep connection to the area will help him achieve a historic victory.
