UN General Assembly President Set to Visit India Next Week

Annalena Baerbock, the President of the United Nations General Assembly, is scheduled to visit India next week, as announced by her spokesperson, La Niece Collins. The visit comes at the invitation of the Indian government and will feature several meetings with key officials.

During her stay, Baerbock will also connect with the UN team in India, led by Resident Coordinator Stefan Priesner. This marks the second high-profile UN visit to India this year, following Secretary-General Antonio Guterres’ visit to the AI Impact Summit in New Delhi back in February.

Baerbock is no stranger to India; she previously rode New Delhi’s Metro while serving as Germany’s foreign minister, working to strengthen the relationship between the two nations. However, this will be her first visit to India in her role as General Assembly President.

In her earlier visit in 2022, Baerbock expressed her belief that India plays a crucial role in shaping the global landscape of the 21st century, particularly in the Indo-Pacific region. She praised India for elevating 400 million people out of extreme poverty over the past 15 years, noting that a society built on pluralism, freedom, and democracy can drive economic growth and stability.

The Indo-Pacific region will again be a key focus during her upcoming visit. Previously, Baerbock signed an agreement aimed at easing the movement of skilled workers between Germany and India.

She also joined Chancellor Olaf Scholz during his visit to India for the seventh round of German-Indian intergovernmental talks, which emphasized themes of innovation, mobility, and sustainability. Germany is part of the G4 group, which includes India, Brazil, and Japan, advocating for changes in the UN Security Council to allow for new permanent members.

Baerbock has had multiple discussions with India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar during their meetings in Germany and on the sidelines of international events. Following her visit to India, she will continue her trip to China.
