OpenAI Introduces GPT-5.5: Enhanced AI Capabilities

OpenAI has just launched a new version of its AI model, GPT-5.5, promising significant advancements in reasoning, coding, and scientific research. This latest model is reported to be faster and more efficient than its predecessor, GPT-5.4, while also offering improved safety features.

Key Enhancements

GPT-5.5 is said to excel in handling complex tasks with better planning, tool usage, and self-correction. It particularly shines in coding and debugging scenarios. According to OpenAI, the model achieved an impressive 82.7% accuracy on the Terminal-Bench 2.0 test, surpassing competitors such as Anthropic’s Claude Opus 4.7 and Google’s Gemini 3.1 Pro.

Despite its enhanced capabilities, GPT-5.5 maintains the same processing speed as GPT-5.4, but does so using fewer tokens per task. This efficiency makes it a more cost-effective tool for developers and businesses.

Custom Options for Different Needs

OpenAI is offering GPT-5.5 in two distinct versions to cater to various requirements:

  • GPT-5.5 Thinking: Optimized for tackling complex problems quickly and intelligently.
  • GPT-5.5 Pro: Aimed at providing higher-quality outputs with reduced wait times, suitable for demanding workflows.

These options are designed to give organizations flexibility, whether for research purposes or enterprise automation.

Safety Features and Risk Management

In terms of safety, GPT-5.5 includes robust safeguards. The model has gone through thorough testing to address potential cybersecurity and biological risks, in collaboration with about 200 early-access partners. While classified as a “High” risk, it falls below the “Critical” threshold, meaning it could intensify existing issues without introducing new risks. This cautious launch reflects an increasing concern regarding the potential misuses of advanced AI systems.

The rollout of GPT-5.5 is set to begin for Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise users within ChatGPT and Codex. The company is also working on making GPT-5.5 Pro available for API usage soon, ensuring safety and security measures are met at scale.

Improvements Over GPT-5.4

Here’s a quick comparison showing the advancements of GPT-5.5 over GPT-5.4:

Feature GPT-5.4 GPT-5.5 Improvement
Coding Strong State-of-the-art coding More accuracy, fewer retries
Context Handling Limited Better reasoning across systems Handles ambiguity more effectively
Speed Fast Same latency Maintains speed despite size
Efficiency Higher token use Fewer tokens per task Lower operational costs
Safety Standard safeguards Strongest safeguards yet Enhanced risk testing

As OpenAI continues to innovate, GPT-5.5 represents a significant step forward in creating safer and more effective AI tools for users everywhere.
