India Responds Strongly to Trump’s “Hellhole” Remarks
New Delhi, April 24 – India has firmly rejected remarks made by U.S. President Donald Trump, who echoed sentiments from conservative commentator Michael Savage calling India a “hellhole.” The Indian government described these comments as “uninformed” and inappropriate, noting they do not reflect the strong ties between the two nations.
The remarks were made during an episode of Savage’s talk radio show, which Trump shared on his Truth Social account without additional commentary. Savage suggested that immigrants from countries like India and China show little loyalty to the U.S., contrasting them with earlier European immigrants.
In a statement, Indian foreign ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal emphasized that such statements are misleading and do not represent the true spirit of the India-U.S. relationship, which is built on mutual respect and collaboration.
The U.S. embassy in New Delhi reaffirmed the positive relationship between the two countries, noting that Trump has previously described India as a great nation.
The Congress party, India’s main opposition, criticized the “hellhole” comment as deeply offensive. They urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to address the issue with Trump directly.
Approximately 5.5 million people of Indian origin reside in the U.S., making Indian Americans one of the largest Asian ethnic groups in the country. Although Trump and Modi enjoyed a close relationship during his presidency, tensions rose following U.S. tariffs imposed on India last year. However, both countries are now exploring a trade deal aimed at fostering better economic cooperation.
