Two Sikh Men Killed in Italy: A Deepening Rift in the Community
Rome, April 22 — The recent killing of two Sikh men in Bergamo, Italy, has highlighted growing tensions within parts of the Indian community in Europe. This incident, labeled an “execution-style” attack, raises concerns about internal conflicts, financial issues, and political divisions.
According to reports from the Italian news outlet ‘Decode 39’, the tragic event took place just before Baisakhi, a major festival for Sikhs. On that day, Rajinder Singh, 47, and Gurmit Singh, 48, both from Punjab, were shot outside a Sikh cultural center. Eyewitnesses said the gunman fired several shots at close range while being recorded by CCTV cameras.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the shooter, another Indian man from a nearby town, had accomplices with him during the attack. This incident forced the cancellation of a planned Baisakhi procession that was expected to attract 2,000 attendees.
Rajinder Singh, who had previously served as president of a Sikh association in Italy, had reportedly been involved in ongoing disputes with a rival group from Antegnate. Tensions had been escalating, leading to official complaints as leadership disputes over the religious center intensified.
Some allegations from groups like Sikhs for Justice (SFJ) suggested that these disagreements stemmed from conflicts during Khalsa Day celebrations, although these claims remain unverified. They do, however, shed light on deeper fractures within the Sikh diaspora.
The killing not only raises alarm over community safety but also underscores a troubling trend of violence related to internal disputes. Such incidents, tied to religious leadership and personal rivalries, are becoming more noticeable among Indian communities in Europe.
Historically viewed as well-integrated, the Sikh community in Italy has often played crucial roles in sectors like agriculture and logistics. However, increasing exposure to complex political issues—like debates surrounding Khalistan—has introduced new challenges, leading to polarization within the community.
The report further noted that these tensions have begun to manifest beyond community settings. Following the tragic events, a political demonstration in Milan featured groups promoting pro-Khalistan messages, signaling that these issues are moving into the public arena.
As the situation unfolds, it raises important questions about the cohesion and safety of the Indian diaspora in Italy and beyond.
