Top tech companies in the U.S., including Google, Meta, Amazon, OpenAI, and Anthropic, are ramping up their lobbying efforts, spending millions more than in previous years, according to a new report from Axios. This surge in spending comes as artificial intelligence (AI) takes center stage in policy discussions.

Recent data reveals that companies like OpenAI and Anthropic, which weren’t heavily involved in Washington just a few years ago, are now spending significant sums on lobbying. For instance, Anthropic spent $1.6 million in early 2026, a big jump from $360,000 during the same period the previous year. OpenAI’s expenditures also rose to $1 million from $560,000.

Among the big players, Meta leads the pack, dropping $7.1 million on lobbying in early 2026. Amazon followed with $4.4 million, while Google spent $2.9 million. Companies like Microsoft are also engaging in policy talks, focusing on issues like export controls.

The topics being discussed with lawmakers cover a broad spectrum. Anthropic is addressing AI procurement, national security, and supply chain issues. OpenAI, during its busiest lobbying quarter, is tackling concerns around AI and copyright, cybersecurity, and cloud computing. On the other hand, Meta and Google are engaged in conversations about data privacy and child safety laws, while Microsoft is focusing on AI in education and digital trade.
