Actor Prakash Raj is currently facing legal challenges after Bhanu Prakash, a board member of Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams and a BJP leader from Andhra Pradesh, accused him of making “defamatory and malicious comments” about the Ramayana, which he claims disrespects Hindu beliefs.
Bhanu Prakash has filed an official complaint, requesting that legal action be taken not only against the actor but also against anyone who may have supported or encouraged those statements. He stated that such remarks could threaten communal harmony.
The controversy originated from Prakash Raj’s appearance at the Kerala Literature Festival in January. During his talk, he discussed a children’s theatre production that featured characters from the Ramayana, such as Rama, Lakshmana, Ravana, and Shurpanakha, in a contemporary and humorous context. The performance incorporated light-hearted references to topics like fruits and taxes, which resonated with audiences. However, clips from his discussion went viral, leading to significant backlash on social media.
The situation escalated earlier this month when advocate Amita Sachdeva filed another complaint on April 16. She identified herself as a practicing Hindu and claimed that Prakash’s remarks were intentional and hurtful, arguing that insults to Hindu deities and the principles of Sanatan Dharma should not be tolerated.
Authorities are currently examining the complaints, and there has been no official statement from Prakash Raj regarding the matter so far.
