NeoCognition Breaks Ground with $40M to Equip AI Agents for On-the-Job Learning

NeoCognition Emerges with $40 Million in Seed Funding

NeoCognition, a startup based in San Francisco, has officially revealed itself after securing $40 million in seed funding. The investment round was led by Cambium Capital and Walden Catalyst Ventures, with additional participation from Vista Equity Partners.

Among the company’s angel investors and advisors are prominent figures such as Lip-Bu Tan, CEO of Intel, Ion Stoica, co-founder of Databricks, and respected AI researchers like Dawn Song, Ruslan Salakhutdinov, and Luke Zettlemoyer.

The startup was founded by Yu Su, Xiang Deng, and Yu Gu, who collaborated in Su’s AI agent lab at Ohio State University. Su, a Sloan Research Fellow, and his team pioneered LLM-based agents prior to the emergence of ChatGPT, contributing research that is now utilized by major players like OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google.

NeoCognition’s innovative concept takes inspiration from human learning. “The true strength of human intelligence lies in the ability to learn and specialize continuously. Our method reflects how people acquire skills through structured experiences, eliminating the need for extensive manual adjustments required by existing models,” Su explains.

Rather than developing agents for specific sectors, NeoCognition aims to create versatile agents that can adapt and specialize independently. This unique method results in agents that are quicker, more cost-effective, reliable, and safer in critical situations, with minimal manual intervention.

The company faces competition from firms like Cognition Labs, Adept, and Cohere for specialized agents, as well as OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google for general-purpose solutions. What distinguishes NeoCognition is its self-learning design. While many competing agents remain unchanging post-launch or require manual updates, NeoCognition’s strategy allows its agents to keep learning and adapting—similar to how a new employee grows in their role.

“At the heart of NeoCognition is a groundbreaking learning mechanism that enables agents to specialize rapidly. We have great confidence in the team’s expertise and believe their research is paving a new way toward specialized intelligence,” said Landon Downs, Managing Partner at Cambium Capital.

The newly acquired seed funding will be used to enhance research efforts, expand the team, and shift focus from academic projects to real-world business applications, particularly targeting enterprise tasks deemed too risky or complex for current AI solutions.
