Pope Clarifies Comments Amid Criticism from Trump

Pope Leo XIV addressed a misunderstanding regarding his recent remarks about global leadership, stating they were not aimed at U.S. President Donald Trump. Speaking during his trip to Africa, the pope noted that his comments about “the world being ravaged by a handful of tyrants” were misinterpreted.

While on a flight to Angola, the pope explained that his statements were prepared weeks earlier and were meant to promote peace, not to engage in a debate with Trump.

Trump, in a social media post, had criticized the pope’s foreign policy views, particularly regarding the U.S.-Israeli tensions with Iran. He expressed that he would not want a pope who supports Iran’s nuclear ambitions. The former president compared the pope’s focus on fear related to his administration to the fear the Catholic Church experienced during COVID-19.

Pope Leo XIV had previously emphasized the need for a “decisive change” towards unity and sustainability. He expressed hope, saying the world is supported by many kind individuals despite the actions of a few leaders.

He also cautioned against those who exploit religion for personal gain, saying, “Woe to those who manipulate religion and the very name of God for their own military, economic or political gain.”

The Vatican continues to engage in discussions surrounding global issues, advocating for peace and fraternity among nations.
