Pope Expresses Support for Lebanon Amid Ongoing Conflict

VATICAN CITY: On Sunday, Pope Leo XIV showed his solidarity with the people of Lebanon, emphasizing the urgent need to protect them during these challenging times. He urged all parties involved in the conflict to pursue peace.

Lebanon has been significantly impacted by the Middle East war, which escalated last month as Israel targeted the Iran-backed Hezbollah group. Reports from Lebanese officials indicate that over 2,000 lives have been lost due to Israeli airstrikes.

Speaking to a gathering at St. Peter’s Square after his Regina Coeli prayer, the pope said, “In these days filled with sorrow, fear, and an unshakeable hope in God, I feel closer than ever to the dear Lebanese people.”

He highlighted the fundamental principle of humanity, which everyone recognizes, saying there is a “moral obligation” to shield civilians from the brutal consequences of war.

As he has in previous statements, the pope called on those involved in the conflict to find a peaceful solution, without naming any specific groups.
