Aisam ul Haq Qureshi to Compete in Men’s Doubles at Asian Games
Aisam ul Haq Qureshi, the president of the Pakistan Tennis Federation (PTF), has announced his participation in the men’s doubles event at the upcoming Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan. At 46 years old, Aisam, who has previously reached the finals of the US Open men’s doubles with India’s Rohan Bopanna, expressed his excitement about the competition.
“I’m the President of the PTF, and I will be carrying out my duties during the Asian Games. However, since I feel fully fit and continue to play tennis regularly, I chose to compete in the doubles event,” Aisam shared on Wednesday.
He will be part of a six-member team representing Pakistan, which also includes experienced players like Aqeel Khan, Muhammad Shoaib, Muzammil Murtaza, along with younger talents Maheen Aftab and Ushna Sohail.
Pakistan is set to compete in both the men’s and women’s events at the Games. Aisam pointed out that the team has a good mix of experience and youth, and he has been actively involved in training with the players leading up to the competition. “I’ve been practicing with the team and doing my best to support the younger players,” he added.
Aisam, who took over as PTF president in 2024 after a successful tennis career, emphasized the progress of tennis in Pakistan, despite facing various challenges. The country will also host the Billie Jean King Cup in October, welcoming players from ten nations. Aisam noted that the tournament aims not only to showcase tennis but also to raise awareness about breast cancer.
For many years, Aisam has been a prominent figure in international tennis, known for his outstanding performances in Grand Slam events before transitioning into sports administration. His partnership with Bopanna is particularly memorable, as they formed a remarkable India-Pakistan duo in men’s doubles by reaching the finals of the US Open.
