Strong Voter Turnout in Thiruvananthapuram Elections
Thiruvananthapuram saw an impressive voter turnout in the latest election, with many constituencies experiencing close contests. As of 8 PM, the overall polling percentage reached 76.98%, a significant increase from 72.06% in the last elections. All 14 assembly constituencies in the district surpassed the 70% turnout mark.
Kattakada led the way with a turnout of 80.72%, followed by Nemom at 80.62% and Kazhakkoottam at 78.67%. On the other hand, Attingal (73.74%), Varkala (73.96%), and Chirayinkeezhu (74.13%) had lower participation compared to previous elections in 2021.
This year’s election was notable for the high turnout in urban areas, where traditionally fewer voters participate. Constituencies like Thiruvananthapuram, Vattiyoorkavu, Nemom, and Kazhakkoottam showed a strong voter presence from early morning. By 1:30 PM, these areas had already exceeded a 50% turnout and went on to surpass 70% by evening.
Polling booths were busy from 7 AM, particularly in Thiruvananthapuram, Nemom, and Vattiyoorkavu, showcasing a clear enthusiasm among voters. The coastal regions also saw a notable turnout, especially among women. Polling stations in areas like Kanjirakulam and Vizhinjam reported long lines in the morning.
Voters who arrived early had to wait about 15 to 20 minutes, while those coming later found the process quicker as the crowds eased. Although the polling slowed in the afternoon, it picked up momentum again in the evening.
Weather played a role in voter turnout, with the sky clearing after a brief spell of rain. D. S. Binulal, who voted at Tirumala, shared that the lines were steady throughout the morning. “I waited around 20 minutes at 10:45 AM, while my elderly mother completed her voting in just 10 minutes,” he mentioned. Many voters appreciated the smoother process this time around.
Feedback from areas like the Salvation Army School in Kowdiar reflected short waiting times, generally between 10 and 20 minutes. Despite an unexpected summer shower in the evening, voter participation remained strong, especially in coastal regions after 4 PM. The polling was peaceful, and strong security measures were in place throughout the day.
Prominent figures, including actor Mohanlal and political leaders like M. A. Baby and Rajeev Chandrasekhar, also came out to cast their votes, highlighting the election’s significance.
