Bayern’s 2014 Star Neuer Stands Tall as Real Madrid Falls at the Bernabeu

Bayern Munich secured a 2–1 win over Real Madrid in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League quarterfinal at the Bernabeu Stadium. The real star of the match was Bayern’s captain and goalkeeper, Manuel Neuer, who, at 40 years old, put on an impressive show.

Neuer was named Player of the Match after making nine important saves, helping Bayern keep their lead despite having many chances to score. The team had an expected goals (xG) rating of 2.92 but missed opportunities that would have extended their advantage.

Bayern took the lead with goals from Luis Daz and Harry Kane. Real Madrid responded with a goal from Kylian Mbappe, which was confirmed by goal-line technology, even though Neuer tried to save it. Throughout the match, Neuer made crucial saves against key players like Mbappe and Vinicius Jr.

Bayern’s coach, Vincent Kompany, praised Neuer’s long-standing success in goal, noting that few goalkeepers can match his achievements.

Neuer’s experience shone through, especially in a tense moment when he successfully denied Vinicius Jr. during a one-on-one. As Dayot Upamecano misplayed a long ball, Vinicius had a clear chance, but Neuer quickly moved to block the shot, making it much harder for the attacker.

After the match, Neuer reflected on their performance, expressing a desire for a larger lead but acknowledging the threat posed by Madrid. He humorously commented on his near save of Mbappe’s goal, saying, “Was it really in? That’s outrageous. In that case, it’s a goalkeeping error.”

As both teams prepare for the second leg in Munich next week, Bayern will be disappointed with their missed chances, while Madrid will feel fortunate to remain in the contest.
