Kim Jong Un Supervision Brings New Rocket Engine Test Focused on Striking the US

North Korea Tests New Solid-Fuel Rocket Engine

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un recently supervised a test of a new solid-fuel rocket engine, as reported by state media. This development aims to enhance weapons that could potentially target the U.S. mainland.

According to the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), the engine was created using carbon-fiber materials and is part of a new five-year defense strategy focused on improving the country’s military capabilities. Kim emphasized that the test holds “great significance” for elevating North Korea’s military strength.

The engine demonstrated a thrust of 2,500 kilonewtons, which is an improvement over a similar engine tested last year. Experts suggest that such an engine design could lead to more portable long-range missiles.

While the test showcases North Korea’s advancements, some analysts believe the claim might be exaggerated since critical details like the engine’s combustion duration were not disclosed.

Solid-fuel missiles present an advantage as they can be launched more quickly compared to traditional liquid-fuel ones, making them harder to detect during a potential conflict.

However, North Korea still faces challenges in reliably deploying intercontinental ballistic missiles, particularly concerning the durability of warheads during reentry.

In addition to the rocket engine test, Kim inspected special military operations training and the testing of a new battle tank. He claimed that this tank could withstand nearly all current anti-tank weaponry, although this claim hasn’t been independently confirmed.

These activities illustrate North Korea’s growing military ambitions. Since the breakdown of talks with the U.S. in 2019, the nation has ramped up its development of nuclear and missile technologies, despite facing international sanctions. Kim has left the possibility for discussions open, contingent on Washington dropping its demands for nuclear disarmament.

As part of his broader military agenda, Kim launched a five-year plan during a rare party congress earlier this year, reiterating North Korea’s commitment to expanding its nuclear arsenal and modernizing its military forces.

Both South Korea and the United States are closely observing North Korea’s ongoing weapon development initiatives.
